Biomedical Ethics

Biomedical Ethics is an important and emerging field that explores the complex ethical dilemmas involved in modern medical practice. This course examines philosophical questions that arise in real-world healthcare settings and introduces students to ethical frameworks for evaluating them.

Topics covered include:

1. Fair distribution and rationing of medical resources
2. Physician–patient relationship and patient autonomy
3. Errors in diagnosis and the ethics of truth-telling
4. End-of-life decisions and the physician’s role in executions
5. Organ harvesting, in vitro fertilization, and surrogacy
6. Enhancing human capabilities through biotechnology and genetic engineering
7. Ethical concerns in clinical trials conducted in impoverished communities

To analyze these issues, students will engage with major ethical theories such as Utilitarianism, Deontological ethics, Virtue Ethics, theories of justice, and rights-based approaches.

Dr. Rinita Mazumder is a highly accomplished scholar and professor with profound expertise in philosophy and social thought. She serves as an instructor at Central New Mexico Community College and is an affiliate professor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of New Mexico.

As the Director of the Sowaka Harshita Foundation, Dr. Mazumder is dedicated to advancing knowledge and awareness about genocide, cultural identity, and societal structures. Her interdisciplinary approach, combined with years of academic and community engagement, makes her a compelling and insightful instructor for this course.
