A course on Genocide from Sowaka Harshita Foundation
Course Overview:
This 12-week online course, conducted by the Sowaka Harshita Foundation, offers an in-depth exploration of genocide with a special focus on the Bengal Hindu Genocide, the atrocities of Noakhali, and aspects of the Kashmiri Hindu Genocide. Participants will engage with foundational definitions, Indic perspectives, and case studies to uncover the historical, ethical, and cultural dimensions of genocide.
Through interactive lectures, survivor narratives, and critical analyses, the course seeks to broaden understanding, foster empathy, and challenge conventional perspectives, making it an essential learning experience for students, academics, and human rights advocates alike.

What You Will Learn:
The course will be taught using Video Lectures, presentations, and PDFs covering the following:
- The definitions of genocide as given by Raphael Lemkin, Dadran Vahikin, Irwing Horowitz, and the United Nations definition on the Prevention of Genocide and Atrocities.
- An Indic view of genocide from Pandit Jonoraj.
- The different definitions of genocide and their critique.
- What constitutes the central themes in genocide?
- The question of intent.
- Why one time mass killing is not genocide.
- Why ethnic cleansing is not genocide.
- Why sexual violence is an integral part of genocide.
- Application of the definitions to Noakhali and 1971 Pakistan Bangladesh war and torture of Bengali people fits the definition of genocide.
- And some actual narratives of victims of genocide and ethnic from Noakhali and at present cleansing (the latter on availability).
- General discussion: What were the takeaways from the course and conclusion.
Certifications will be awarded upon course completion by the Sowaka Harshita Foundation.
Instructor Bio:
Dr. Rinita Mazumder is a highly accomplished scholar and professor with profound expertise in philosophy and social thought. She serves as an instructor at Central New Mexico Community College and is an affiliate professor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of New Mexico.
As the Director of the Sowaka Harshita Foundation, Dr. Mazumder is dedicated to advancing knowledge and awareness about genocide, cultural identity, and societal structures. Her interdisciplinary approach, combined with years of academic and community engagement, makes her a compelling and insightful instructor for this course.
